Woodbridge to Wear Camouflage Jerseys in Honor of Military

By Preston Williams (Washington Post)
May 14, 2010
Given baseball superstitions, teams unbeaten this late in the season might be hesitant to make wholesale uniform changes, even in the short term.  No. 3 Woodbrdige (17-0) will tempt that fate. In their two games this week, the Vikings will wear customized camouflage jerseys and caps in honor of the heavy military presence in the area.

Woodbridge Baseball Rallies to Beat Forest Park

By Joe Conroy (News & Messenger)
May 13, 2010
Woodbridge’s baseball and softball complex was adorned with star-shaped balloons with a stars and stripes pattern.  Cars in the parking lot featured various military license plates and bumper stickers.  The Vikings wore their camouflage hats and jerseys and several current and former members of the armed services were in attendance for Woodbridge’s home game against Forest Park Wednesday, a contest that began the Vikings’ Armed Forces Week celebration.

Honoring the Military

By Joe Conroy (News & Messenger)
May 11, 2010
Because several military installations are in and around San Diego, including Navy ports, Marine Corps bases and Coast Guard stations, Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres honor America's armed forces each year by wearing camouflage jerseys and caps for Sunday games and on all military-related holidays and observances.

Woodbridge Crew Results, April 3, 2010, Walter Mess Regatta

By Coach Michael Malak
April 03, 2010
Woodbridge crews showed their depth across many events at the Walter Mess Regatta on Saturday.  The Men’s and Women’s First Eights both advanced through their heats to the finals, the Women’s Second and Third Eights both earned ribbons, with the Women’s Second Eight placing third and the Third Eight placing Second, the Men’s Quad won their race, the Men’s First Four finished second in their final, and the Women’s Novice Eight earned a third place ribbon.   For the second week in a row, races were not started from the regular starting platform due to winds and the poor condition of the starting platform.  All races were started with floating starts, which makes comparison of times between events rather meaningless because there is no way to tell how long each race actually was.   The Woodbridge Men’s First Eight was a very young crew, with 5 sophomore and 3 junior rowers and a junior coxswain, and found themselves in a heat with powerhouse Thomas Jefferson and the Shrewsbury School from England, which was visiting and  being hosted by Thomas Jefferson High School.  Shrewsbury School has one of the top  rowing programs in England and advanced to the semi-finals of the prestigious Royal English Henley in 2008 and to the quarterfinals in 2009.  TJ and Shrewsbury dominated the field, but Woodbridge had a good race and finished third in the heat, coming across the finish line 8.6 seconds ahead of South County and 18.5 seconds ahead of Langley to earn a spot in the final.  In the final, Woodbridge held with the leaders for the first 500 meters, but the size and experience of TJ and Shrewsbury allowed them to again pull away from the rest of the field, with Thomas Jefferson besting Shrewsbury by 7.4 seconds for first place.  Washington and Lee was a close third, 2 seconds behind the Brits, followed by Robinson, Woodson, Oakton and Woodbridge.  In besting the domestic field and the Shrewsbury School from England, Thomas Jefferson established itself as the team to beat in the area and perhaps the country, and as a potential candidate to travel to the Royal English Henley in the summer.  (Woodbridge line-ups are on following pages).  Woodbridge coach Mike Malak competed in the Royal English Henley Regatta in 1973 as a coxswain for the University of Wisconsin, and that Wisconsin boat set a record in their event in the quarterfinals.   The Woodbridge Women’s First Eight found themselves in a very tough heat that had four of the six finalists from last week’s Polar Bear regatta in it.  Woodbridge finished third in their heat, edging out Madison by 0.44 seconds to advance to the final.  Because of the wind and the poor condition of the starting platform, the races were all started with floating starts.  In the final, the race was started with Woodbridge not having a good point in its lane, and coxswain Britt Schaeufele had to steer the boat out of the lane next to it to get it back into its lane during the first 75 meters.  This cost them time in this crucial point in the race and they found themselves having to row from behind.  They were able to pass Lake Braddock, but could not make up lost ground on the leaders.  The race was won by Robinson for the second week in a row, followed by McLean, Oakton, Woodson, Woodbridge and Lake Braddock.  (See following pages for line-ups).          The Woodbridge Men’s Quad rowed very smoothly and led Potomac from start to finish, winning by 19 seconds.    The Woodbridge Men’s First Varsity Four was composed of all Senior rowers and a sophomore coxswain.  The event came down to a two boat race between Woodbridge and McLean, with the rest of the field over 17 seconds back.  McLean made a move at the halfway mark and pulled away from Woodbridge by a length, and Woodbridge was not able to close the gap, finishing 5.7 seconds behind McLean.  (see line-ups following).   Woodbridge Men’s Second Four finished third behind McLean and Fairfax.   In their first race ever, the Woodbridge Men’s Novice Four finished fourth.  Woodbridge was hampered by the absence of several freshmen during the Spring break but hopes to race a Freshman Eight next week.   The Woodbridge Lightweight Women’s Eight entered the event for Second Eights, hoping to test their speed against bigger crews.  Woodbridge earned the third place ribbon, behind Robinson and Oakton, and ahead of Lake Braddock, Washington-Lee, and Woodson.   The Women’s Third Eight found itself in a furious sprint for first place with Lake Braddock and Robinson.  Woodbridge was edged out for first by Lake Braddock by 1.2 seconds, but earned second place, finishing 1.5 seconds ahead of Robinson, with Forest Park 9.3 seconds back and Woodson trailing the field.   The Woodbridge Lightweight Women’s Four finished fourth in their race behind Madison, South County, and Potomac.   Woodbridge Freshmen and Novice Women also raced for the first time, with the Novice Eight taking home third place ribbons behind Hylton and Madison, and ahead of Lake Braddock “B” and Robinson “B”.    The Woodbridge Freshmen Women’s Eight finished fifth, behind McLean, Robinson, Langley and Forest Park, and ahead of Washington-Lee.  There was less than one length (3.4 seconds) separating third through fifth place.   The next race for Woodbridge is next Saturday, April 10, the Darrell Winslow Regatta, on the Occoquan River course at Sandy Run Park in Fairfax County, Virginia.         Walter Mess Regatta   Saturday April 3, 2010 Woodbridge Crew Line-ups     GIRLS:    W 1st Woodbridge baseball wins Let’s Play Two Tournament title

By John Boal (News & Messenger)
March 31, 2010
Nick Rogowski wasn’t going to come out of the game. Not feeling the way he was on the mound Wednesday.  He didn’t get the credit on his pitching record, but Wednesday’s 9-8, 10-inning Woodbridge win over Stone Bridge in the Let’s Play Two Tournament championship game was most certainly Rogowski’s.
